Dinosaurs suddenly became extinct about 65 million years ago...

...at the end of the Cretaceous period, which was a time of high volcanic and tectonic activity. There are a lot of theories why the extinction occurred. The most widely accepted theory is that an asteroid impact caused major climactic changes which the dinosaurs couldn't adapt to. All that's left of the dinosaurs are fossils. Although dinosaurs' fossils have been known since 1818, the term dinosaur (deinos = terrifying; sauros = lizard) was coined by the English anatomist Sir Richard Owen in 1842. The only three dinosaurs known at the time were Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, very large dinosaurs. There are currently over 330 described dinosaur species and this number is growing...

Tyrannosaurus Rex - One of the largest-ever flesh-eating land animals

Tyrannosaurus is also the most famous. For example, it has been featured in more movies than any other single dinosaur. Tyrannosaurus had a huge skull with powerful jaws lined with 7-inch (18-cm) serrated teeth. Contrary to earlier conceptions of sluggish mobility, Tyrannosaurus is now thought by some to have been capable of bursts of up to 30 mph (48 km/h). In contrast to its massive legs, Tyrannosaurus had relatively short, small arms. Although they seem vestigal and useless, they were powerful enough to lift over 450 pounds (270 kg). Tyrannosaurus was found in North America and Asia. The most famous species is Tyrannosaurus rex from North America...

Which was the smartest dinosaur?

Although there is no direct way to measure a dinosaur's intelligence, one of the few possible measures of intelligence might be a large brain in a small body. The genus that perhaps fits this description best was the Cretaceous bird-like dinosaur Troodon, which also may have had binocular vision (depth perception) and excellent eyesight and was built for speed. Even so, this dinosaur was probably not as "intelligent" as most modern birds and mammals...

Velociraptor was a ferocious predator

Found in Mongolia, China and Russia, Velociraptor was a ferocious predator with the second toe of each foot bearing a formidably large, retractable claw. Velociraptor was similar in appearance to the larger Deinonychus and the much larger Utahraptor. Like Deinonychus and possibly Utahraptor, it may have hunted in packs -- although Velociraptor and Utahraptor fossils have never been found in groups like Deinonychus. Velociraptor was not as fast as a cheetah, nor as smart as a chimpanzee, as suggested in the movie Jurassic Park...

Why Dinosaurs Had "Fowl" Breath!

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2007) A number of studies have shown that dinosaurs were the direct ancestors of birds and have identified a suite of avian characteristics in theropods. The dinosaurs we studied from the fossil record had long uncinate processes similar in structure to those of diving birds. This suggests both dinosaurs and diving birds need longer lever arms to help them breathe. Finding these structures in modern birds and their extinct dinosaur ancestors suggests that these running dinosaurs had an efficient respiratory system and supports the theory that they were highly active animals that could run relatively quickly when pursuing their prey...

Paleontology, what is that?

Paleontology is the study of prehistoric life forms on Earth through the examination of plant and animal fossils. Evolution is both a scientific fact and a scientific theory. Evolution is a fact in the sense that life has changed through time. In nature today, the characteristics of species are changing, and new species are arising. The fossil record is the primary factual evidence for evolution in times past....

Dinosaurs are not extinct!

There is an almost universal consensus among paleontologists that birds are the descendants of theropod dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were an extremely varied group of animals. Some were herbivorous, others carnivorous. Some dinosaurs were bipeds, some were quadrupeds, and others, such as Ammosaurus and Iguanodon, could walk just as easily on two or four legs. Regardless of body type, nearly all known dinosaurs were well-adapted for a predominantly terrestrial, rather than aquatic or aerial, habitat.
