  Pirates
of the Mediterranean - Greeks,
Romans, the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians as well as
other nations in the ancient Mediterranean area, all share
the common habit of having engaged in piracy. Great nations in maritime
commerce, but as history proofs over and over again, along with
great nations comes not only prospering societys and culture but also darker sides
like warfare. Vikings from the
north and the Scandinavian countries and Moors from Spain and northern Africa
also took part in piracy deeds.

Pirates of the Caribbean - The late 16th century wars between England and Spain led to an increase in piracy in the Caribbean waters.
Spain financed their warfare by shipping stolen treasures from Mexico and South America back to Europe.
When the treasure-laden galleons reached and passed through the Caribbean seas they became a natural
target for pirates.
Pirates of today - Piracy still goes on in these very days. In the Caribbean and the South China Seas, but
much of todays piracy is about drug smuggling. Thugs armed with axes and knifes sneaks on board
in an attempt to steal cargo.
Pirates of old and the cutlass -
The cutlass was a short bladed,
slightly curved and singled edged sword, sharpened on the outer blade.
It had the resemblance of a sabre, with a slightly heavier and shorter blade. This made it an all-round
very effective weapon and tool. In combat the sharp blade would easily cut and cleave through muscle and bone
of your opponent and the thickness and weight of the weapon made it useful when breaking down thick wooden doors
and cutting through heavy marlin lines.
Buccaneer, Privateer, Corsair, the origin of the pirate
Buccaneers - were initially huntsmen of the west-indies, they got their name from the french word for
barbecue(boucan) as they used that method for cooking their meat. The Spanish drove them
from their land
and they banded with runaway slaves, deserters and others with a mutual hate towards
the Spanish.
A privateer - was a pirate who by commission from the government was authorized to seize or destroy
a merchant vessel of another nation. For their efforts the Captain and crew would receive a portion of the plunder,
the rest going to the government. Captain and crew were offered safe harbor and protection.
Corsair -
refers to pirates from the Mediterranean. They preyed upon the shipping lanes of
Christian countries. Initially they fought for religion, but the rewards of piracy grew to greater
appeal and soon they were full-fledged pirates, with no interest in religious ideals.

This page is dedicated to the Golden Age of
Piracy, particularly in the Caribbean
Its main reason for existence is personal in nature.
Believe it or not, this page was probably the first page on piracy to exist on the web.
From the beginning, this page was never intended to be "fancy". I have left the dancing
pirates and other fluff to page developers more interested in presentation than content.
I have tried to make the site aesthetically pleasing with original artwork as well as
public domain images but the central focus is and will remain written information on
piracy drawn from a variety of sources...

Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean Author:
Edward KritzlerAt the end of the fifteenth century, the Spanish
Inquisition forced many Jews to flee the country. The most adventurous among them took to
the high seas as freewheeling outlaws. In ships bearing names such as the Prophet Samuel,
Queen Esther, and Shield of Abraham, they attacked and plundered the Spanish fleet while
forming alliances with other European powers to ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding.
JEWISH PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is the entertaining saga of a hidden chapter in Jewish
history and of the cruelty, terror, and greed that flourished during the Age of Discovery.
Readers will meet such daring figures as "the Great Jewish Pirate" Sinan,
Barbarossa’s second-in-command; the pirate rabbi Samuel Palache, who founded Holland´s
Jewish community; Abraham Cohen Henriques, an arms dealer who used his cunning and
economic muscle to find safe havens for other Jews; and his pirate brother Moses, who is
credited with the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628, the largest heist in
pirate history. Filled with high-sea adventures—including encounters with Captain Morgan
and other legendary pirates—and detailed portraits of cities stacked high with
plunder, such as Port Royal, Jamaica, JEWISH PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN captures a gritty
and glorious era of history from an unusual and
eye-opening perspective.

The Republic of Pirates Author:
Colin WoodardWelcome to the Pirate Republic—the
early-eighteenth-century home to some of the great pirate captains, including
Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow
pirates—former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves—this "Flying Gang"
established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone
of freedom in which servants were free, blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders
were chosen or deposed by a vote. For a brief, glorious period the Pirate Republic was
enormously successful. It cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe
from its New World empires. Imperial authorities and wealthy shipowners denounced its
residents as the enemies of mankind, but common people saw them as heroes. Colin Woodard
tells the dramatic untold story of the Pirate Republic that shook the very foundations
of the British and Spanish Empires and fanned the democratic sentiments that would one
day drive the American Revolution.
