The Spear of Destiny

Spear of Destiny

According to Christian texts, the Spear of Destiny also known as the Holy Lance is the spear that is reported in the Gospel of John (19:31-37) as having pierced the side of Jesus during his crucifixion.

There are several objects that are reputed to be the Spear of Destiny.

A crusader named Peter Bartholomew reported that he had had a vision in which he was told that the Holy Lance was buried in St. Peter's Cathedral in Antioch. The year was 1098 and the Crusaders were under siege from the Seljuk Turks. After much digging in the cathedral, Bartholomew discovered the lance. A marvelous discovery for the crusaders and at the same time, dissension had begun in the ranks of the Muslim army and as a result the crusaders were able to rout the Muslims and capture Antioch.

Another of the many Spears of Destiny is the one in The Vatican. Some sources describes it as having been on display in the basilica of Mount Zion in Jerusalem adjacent to the Crown of Thorns. The point of the spearhead was snapped by the Persians following their conquest of Jerusalem in A.D. 615. The point was set into an icon and has appeared on different locations throughout history. It ended up in France and it´s last known whereabouts was at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris where it was kept during the Revolution, subsequently it disappeared and hasn´t been found since. The lower section of the spearhead is what today resides in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

The Holy Lance and the Roman Emperors

The Holy Lance

The Roman Emperors also used a Holy Lance as a part of their imperial insignia. Henry IV, the third German Holy Roman Emperor had an inscription added to it, "Nail of Our Lord". In 1411 Sigismund was made Holy Roman Emperor and he announced: "It is the Will of God that the Imperial Crown, Orb, Scepter, Crosses, Sword and Lance of the Holy Roman Empire must never leave the soil of the Fatherland". Later when the army of Napoleon approached Nuremberg in the spring of 1796, many were terrified that Napoleon would seize the Spear and rule the world with it. The relics was entrusted to one Baron von Hügel, who promised to return the objects as soon as peace had been restored and the safety of the collection could be assured. But von Hügel took advantage of the confusion over who was the legal owner of the relics and managed to sell the whole collection to the Hapsburgs in Austria.

Adolf Hitler too became obsessed with the thought of possessing the Spear of Destiny. In the Wagner opera Parsival, Klingsor was a despicable adversary of the Knights of the Holy Grail and as legends and possibly even true history tells it, no figure was more feared than the black magician Landulph II of Capua. He too, being obsessed with the powers of the Spear of Destiny.

Hitler identified himself with Wagner's character and the magician and saw their struggles as parallel to his own quest for the holy icon and the blueprint for world conquest by Nazi power. He believed he would one day fulfill a historic destiny.

Hitler´s successes as Nazi dictator have given way to a number of occult theories.
One of the most common of these is the story of the Spear of Destiny. Also called the Holy Lance, this spear was believed to have been the weapon used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ at the Crucifixion. Legend has it that whoever possesses the lance will rule the world. The lance appears both in factual history and in fiction. In the Wagner opera Parsival, Klingsor was a despicable adversary of the Knights of the Holy Grail. The fiend sought to capture the Spear of Destiny from them and use it in his practice of black magic.

Nordic mythology tells us of chief god Odin's spear, called Gungnir

Odin with Gungnir

Gungnir ("The Spear of Heaven")
Gungnir is an artifact made of a metal unique to the dimension of Asgard, uru. The three-pronged spear is of unknown origin, predating the current incarnation of Odin himself. At Odin's "birth" at the dawn of the current age of Asgardians, he found Gungnir on the Plains of Ida and used it to focus his power to fashion Asgard as it is known today.

Hindu God, the Lord Shiva wields a trident called Trishula

Shiva and the Trishula

The three points of the Trishula represents Shiva´s three aspects - creator, destroyer and protector.

The trishula is one of the most popular symbols of the god Shiva
Based on the Sanskrit terms shula (spear, lance) and tri (three), the trishula or trident has three sharp points rather than one. In extension, or perhaps even being the origin of this symbol, also a naturally occuring three-pronged branch from a tree is called trishula.

One of the most significant of all the Vedic gods is Shiva.
Shiva is often shown as a handsome young man, with long hair from which flows a spurt of the Ganga (Ganges) River (an emblem of purity) and in which is also a crescent moon. He is also white or light bluish in complexion, sometimes with a third eye between the eyebrows on the forehead, and usually with four arms (a sign of universal power) holding a Trishula (a trident, showing his ruling proficiency.

Secrets of the Holy Lance: The Spear of Destiny in History & Legend

Spear Of Destiny
Shiva - The Wild God of Power and Ecstasy
Autor: Wolf-Dieter Storl

An extensive look at all the aspects of multi-natured Shiva. Explores the shamanic roots of world spirituality as exemplified by this Hindu god who shares many of the attributes of the Norse Odin and the Celtic Cernunnos. Looks at Shiva´s relation to contemporary culture, Tantra, and the dualistic religions of the West. To his devotees Shiva is the entire universe and the core of all beings. Hindu myth shows him appearing at the beginning of creation as a giant pillar of fire from which this world sprang forth. Yet he is also the most approachable of gods, for he is the lover of lovers and the devotee of his devotees. Of the 1,008 names of Shiva, Pashupati, Lord of Animals, is one of the most common. His special relation to animals along with his trickster nature reveal the deep connection of Shiva to shamanism and other gods such as the Norse Odin and the Celtic Cernunnos that came out of the Paleolithic traditions. Ethnologist Wolf-Dieter Storl was first captivated by Shiva when he was in India as a visiting scholar at Benares Hindu University. In this book he invites readers to join in the lively and mythical world of Shiva, or Mahadev, God of All Gods. Shiva is a study in contrasts: As the lord of dance he looses himself in ecstatic abandon; with his consort Parvati he can make love for 10,000 years. Both men and women worship him for his ability to unite and balance masculine and feminine energies. But as the ascetic Shankar he sits in deep meditation, shunning women, and none dare disturb him lest he open his third eye and immolate the entire universe. Lord of intoxicants and poisons, he is the keeper of secret occult knowledge and powers, for which he is worshipped by yogis and demons alike. Shiva dances both the joy of being and the dance of doom--but in every aspect he breaks through the false ego to reveal the true self lying within. This is his true power.

The Masks of Odin
Autor: Elsa-Brita Titchenell

Titchenell ties Norse specifics into universal themes in convincing fashion. She starts out with a paragraph describing the appearance of the tree of life in a variety of religions around the world and through history. She then goes immediately to Yggdrasil, covering language and meaning, the Norns, Odin and Mimer´s well, its 3 roots, and more. The way she integrates bits and pieces from multiple lays of the Edda in putting together a comprehensive view of the tree´s many meanings is really illuminating. Theosophy is a wisdom religion that posits a universal higher power, a common purpose and underlying deeper understanding in all religions. The Masks of Odin a useful addition to Edda study.

Secrets of the Holy Lance
Autor: Jerry E. Smith, George Piccard

As Jesus Christ hung on the cross, a Roman centurion pierced his side with a spear. And there is an ancient legend that whoever possesses this Holy Lance and understands its powers, holds in his hand the destiny of the world. Secrets of the Holy Lance traces the Spear from its possession by Constantine to Charlemagne. In the hands of kings and emperors for two thousand years: Did it come within Hitler´s grasp? Did it rest in Antarctic ice? Was it infused with magic by shedding Jesus blood? Is it now hidden in Europe? Neither debunking nor worshiping, Smith pierces the veil of myth and mystery around the Spear.

Spear Of Destiny
Autor: Trevor Ravenscroft

The Spear of Destiny is impacted with a great deal of esoteric knowledge. Trevor Ravenscroft describes how for 2000 years, since it pierced the side of Christ, this mysterious artifact has been invested with amazing occult powers. He records the legend and its continuing fulfillment in the decline of the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, and the 20th century. His account tells the story of the chain of men who possessed the Spear, from Herod the Great to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, and how they sought to change the face of history by wielding its occult powers for good or evil. The Spear is also identified as the Lance of the Holy Grail mentioned in the sagas of the Dark Ages. The final chapters of the book describe a Manichean battle of worlds behind the changing scene of the 20th century. Also claimed by Ravenscroft are the Satanic occult faculties developed by of Adolf Hitler during his early desperate years in Austria, describing how he furthered his aims and his attempted conquest of Europe through the use of black magic practices.
